Where are the jobs located?
In short, the jobs are everywhere!
Many people think that the APS is mainly a Canberra thing. Actually, that couldn't be farther from the truth – the APS is everywhere, with two-thirds of the workforce located outside of Canberra.
It is true that capital cities tend to have a higher proportion of the APS workforce. However, there are many agencies that have offices in regional centres and rural areas. Some also have visiting teams who work a lot in Australia's more remote communities.
Some agencies like the Departments of Defence and Environment, the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Federal Police, Australia Post and the Bureau of Meteorology have employees in many locations across Australia.
We also have agencies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has offices in each State capital as well as overseas, and other agencies whose employees travel overseas as part of their role.
So really there are jobs everywhere. However, the important distinction is that policy roles and senior positions are often located in Canberra. We need a diverse range of people to come and work in Canberra, as that is where laws and funding decisions are made and where government policy is formed.
