Defence Science & Technology (DST) is committed to providing training and entry level employment opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).The mechanical apprenticeship position will provide the opportunity for apprentices to complete a trade in Mechanical Fabrication within a research environment. The Mechanical apprentice will be provided with a DST supervisor who will be responsible for their daily supervision and the apprentice will receive hands on experience within Scientific Engineering Services (SES) and the wider DST site.
The Mechanical apprentice will during the course of the apprenticeship, develop skills in the areas of:
• General machining using manual milling machines and lathes
• General 3 axis computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining and turning
• Use of CNC electro discharge machines
• Interpret engineering drawings
• Interact with computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software to program CNC machines.
• Interact with additive manufacturing technology
In combination with on-site training, successful progress throughout and completion of TAFE studies in the Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical) and will be required which will be supported under the Defence Learning Manual.
All shortlisted applicants will be required to sit an online aptitude test which focuses on the areas of Comprehension, Mechanical Reasoning and Mathematics. In order to be shortlisted further, applicants will need to be assessed as competitive against the relevant benchmarks for the position.
